Comment to CRS:

It seems as though you have not truly researched Christian Mysticism, but rather just taken other people's word on what they think/thought it is. According to your site, Christian mystics abandon the Word to find their spiritual truths in experience. All I can say is that maybe some people think they are "Christian mystics", and are not; and visa versa. I know far too many people claiming to be "Christian mystics", who HOLD to the Word and only the Word. Yes they have experiences that are AWESOME, but it is WITHIN the Word.

CRS response:

Perhaps there’s always more room and reason to research a topic like Christian mysticism. For me, many years ago two faith professing family members claimed to visit heaven in a visionary experience they shared which they and others thought was awesome. That is what jump-started my own personal research into extra-biblical mysticism, or “Christian mysticism.”

Prior to this I noticed their family slowly shifting from a fundamental Christian worldview to one that now included signs and wonders, personal revelations/prophecies, appearances of angels, following self-proclaimed prophets and apostles, spirit-slain holy laughter, etc. They took a free-dive into a mystical worldview using the bible to support it. They now have added Hebrew Roots to their paradigm. Basically, they’ve ended up with a hodgepodge of myths, fables, and perversions of Scripture that makeup “another gospel” (Gal 1:6).

My point is that anyone can make the bible say what they want it to say. Put on Pentecostal glasses, Catholic glasses, New Apostolic Reformation glasses, ecumenical glasses, you name it, and the bible is used to defend and support it. In fact, Christian mystics do NOT hold to the Word of God without somewhere improperly interpreting it or adding to it because of their pre-existing worldview and/or self-serving paradigm.

Christians are commanded to “not be deceived.” And yet, so many literally embrace deception for something they want or desire more than fulfilling this God-given command: feeling closer to God, wanting to be a superior or elite Christian, partaking of the supernatural, doing something big for God, following after signs and wonders, experiencing His presence, wanting more of Him or His holiness, etc., etc. Do they ever stop and wonder about God’s prescribed ways and safe parameters in Scripture for abiding in Him, holiness, service, and faithfulness? You see, for many it’s really not about the God of the Scriptures. It’s about how their perception of Him makes them feel, which becomes their worldview or paradigm that prevents them from not being deceived.

I encourage you to think about this and use your God-given intellect to dig deep into the Scriptures and to pray, for only God can deliver from deception and grant repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth (2 Tim 2:25-26).
