'Don't talk down to us, Mr Press'
A Rebuttal to William H. Cuke's Letter to NationNews.com
On May 5, 2006, Christian Research Service (hereinafter CRS) sent an e-mail letter to Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, concerning Benny Hinn and his May 19-21, 2006 crusade in Trinidad & Tobago. Although the letter was brief, it informed Prime Minister Manning that Benny Hinn is a proven false prophet, false teacher, and false healer. The letter also included links to ministries that have spent years researching Benny Hinn and others within the Word-Faith Movement.
There was no reply from Prime Minister Manning.
On May 7, 2006, the letter to Prime Minister Manning was followed-up with "An Open Letter to the People of Trinidad & Tobago concerning Benny Hinn." This letter, as with similar letters written to people and government officials in other foreign countries, served to spark lively debate in the foreign news media, and inform, educate, and alert people to the deception behind Benny Hinn's teachings and his so-called "Holy Spirit Miracle Crusades" (the letters and additional information on Benny Hinn may be read at http://www.christianresearchservice.com/Benny_Hinn.htm).
Three months later, on August 9, 2006, NATIONNEWS.COM, the leading newspaper in Barbados, printed a Letter to the Editor written by William H. Cuke. The letter was titled, "Don't talk down to us, Mr Press."
Mr. Cuke's letter, which may be read at NATIONNEWS.COM in its entirety, accuses CRS's director, Bud Press, of using a "back-door approach" to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, and states that Press' letter to the people of Trinidad & Tobago "is laced with arrogance, hypocrisy and misrepresentation of the Bible."
Nevertheless, CRS recognizes a person's freedom to disagree and express his or her opinions. Indeed, if it can be proven that CRS has misrepresented and even misinterpreted the Bible, then an apology, repentance, and a retraction is in order. The same applies to William Cuke.
With that in mind, Mr. Cuke's letter centers around CRS's suggestion to the Trinidad & Tobago officials to put Benny Hinn to the Biblical test, by taking him to the "nearest hospital to visit the sick and dying," as well as CRS's usage of 1 Corinthians 12 (where the use of spiritual gifts are outlined). In particular, verse 9, which teaches, to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit...
In reference to Bud Press and his letter to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, Mr. Cuke states:
"Why should he expect Mr Hinn as he puts it: "as ordained in 1 Corinthians: 12, immediately go to the hospitals and emergency rooms in America . . . ."? when the Scriptures have ordained no one to do such!" (emp. his)
Continuing, Mr. Cuke states that:
"As a matter of fact, The Bible does not command or even suggest such an arrogant approach to the healing ministry as Mr Press is demanding of the evangelist. Our great example concerning the healing ministry is no other than our Lord Jesus Himself. Throughout the Gospels it is reported that He healed all who came to Him" (emp. his).
Apparently, Mr. Cuke has not read chapter 11 of Benny Hinn's book, Welcome, Holy Spirit (1997 edition) where, beginning on page 230, Hinn writes,
"In the mid-1970's I attended a Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International Convention in Miami. In one of the services, Demos Shakarian, the founder of the organization, gave a prophecy I could not erase from my mind. He declared on God's authority: 'The day will come when believers will have such an anointing on their life that they will walk through hospitals, laying hands on the sick, and the sick will be healed.'
"I wondered, 'Would I ever see such a manifestation? Would God raise masses of people from their beds of affliction?'"
According to Hinn, Demos Shakarian's prophecy and Hinn's questions were answered in 1976. On page 231 of Welcome, Holy Spirit, Hinn writes that he accepted an invitation from Pastor Fred Spring to conduct a series of meetings in his Pentecostal church in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada. It was here that Hinn also accepted another invitation to visit a hospital:
"During the crusade I received a special invitation from the Reverend Mother of a Catholic hospital in the area. She wanted me to conduct a service for the patients-along with three other Pentecostal preachers and seven Catholic priests."
Hinn agreed, and describes the condition of the patients in the hospital:
"There were patients present with varying types of ailments. Some were in wheelchairs. Others had been rolled right into the chapel on their beds-with intravenous feeding tubes in their arms. Some patients were too ill to be moved to the chapel. Doctors and nurses were looking on from the balcony. Many could not attend because of the limited space."
On pages 232-234 of Welcome, Holy Spirit, Hinn writes that "Patients began to receive instant healing" as the "Spirit of the Lord descended mightily." Then, after the service in the chapel, Hinn writes that the Reverend Mother asked, "Would you mind coming now and laying hands on all the patients in the rooms who could not come to the service?"
According to the book, Hinn agreed, and was joined with "More than fifty doctors, nurses, Pentecostal preachers, priests and nuns" as his "Miracle Invasion team" headed for the hospital rooms (p. 234).
Hinn writes, "As we walked down the halls of the hospital that day you could feel God's Spirit all over the building" (p. 234). "Within a few minutes the hospital looked almost like it had been hit by an earthquake. People were under the power of the Holy Spirit up and down the hallways as well as in the rooms."
Therefore, in his own words, Benny Hinn admits to visiting a hospital, and going room-to-room to visit the sick and dying. This is one reason why Bud Press suggested that the government officials of Trinidad & Tobago put Benny Hinn to the Biblical test (1 Thessalonians 5:11; 1 John 4:1), and take him to the hospitals and emergency rooms. Then, if Hinn fails the test, put him back on the plane.1
Laws are different in foreign countries. For example, according to this December 6, 2005 Pacific Islands Report, "The Fiji Council of Churches called on the Government to investigate the purpose of controversial South Korean Reverend Sun Myung Moon's trip to Fiji before approving a visa."
According to the article, the investigation resulted in the Fiji Ministry of Home Affairs denying entry to the self-proclaimed messiah, Sun Myung Moon, and his entourage.
To ban Sun Myung Moon from landing in Fiji was a controversial move on the part of Fijian government officials. But they did it. By doing so, they not only set a precedent, they demonstrated their desire to prevent a false messiah from entering their country.
They banned Sun Myung Moon, but welcomed Benny "I am a messiah" Hinn. Hmmm...
Now that it has been proven that Benny Hinn claims to have visited the sick and dying in a hospital, a question that comes to mind is: What does Benny Hinn have to say about the gift of healing, divine health, and the spiritual gifts? The answer is found on his website and the Trinidad & Tobago news media:
"Divine Healing 12-Session CD Set, In this memorable study, Pastor Benny Hinn offers an insightful and biblical foundation for divine healing. You will discover how God desires to bring healing and pardon to all who believe. You will trace the impact of the Savior's work on the cross that provides healing. You will learn the life-changing principles for claiming God's gift of healing for you and your loved ones. Get ready to be inspired and enriched with this powerful CD teaching series!" (emp. added, http://www.bennyhinn.org/shopping/productdesc.cfm/itemid/313).
"God Almighty wants you well and healthy. Divine health is and always has been better than divine healing. Divine health was always God's plan for man" (excerpt from "Divine health is God's promise for your life," http://tinyurl.com/zpv2n, emp. added).
"Pastor Benny used the children of Israel as an example, pointing out that they were all healed after they came out of Egypt. He focused on God's promise of healing and challenged those present to trust God for miracles" ("Japan Crusade Closes Dramatically," http://www.bennyhinn.org/articles/articledesc.cfm/id/170).
"Amazing! You shall receive power-the anointing, the spiritual gifts-after the Holy Ghost-the presence, the person, the fruit-comes upon you.
"Do you see it? The fruit of the Spirit, so missing in the church today, is connected to the presence of God. The gifts and ministry of God, also sadly missing, are connected to the power of God" ("What is the Anointing?" http://tinyurl.com/s755m).
"Hundreds of worshippers flocked to the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain yesterday as the Benny Hinn Holy Spirit Miracle Services began its three-day healing and deliverance Ministry" (Trinidad & Tobago Express, 5/20/06, http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_news?id=160950451).
"AMERICAN televangelist Benny Hinn kicked off his three-day miracle crusade by promising to heal sick bodies, oppressed lives and lost souls, in a three-hour rally on Friday at Queen's Park Savannah. 'People of God expect your miracle tonight,' he proclaimed" (Trinidad & Tobago's Newsday, 5/21/06, http://www.newsday.co.tt/news/0,37762.html).
"Hinn said that thousands of people had been healed during the past three days" ("'Crime level will go down,'" Trinidad & Tobago Express, 5/23/06, http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_news?id=160951797).
Needless to say, over the years, Benny Hinn has focused on the "anointing" and divine healing more so than anything else. Yet, one question still looms over Hinn's "healing" crusades like a dark cloud: Why do precious children and adults confined to wheelchairs with debilitating diseases leave Hinn's crusades the same way they came in? (Refer to The Trinidad Guardian article, "They all look for miracles")
To reiterate, Mr. Cuke states: "Why should he [Bud Press] expect Mr Hinn as he puts it: "as ordained in 1 Corinthians: 12, immediately go to the hospitals and emergency rooms in America . . . ."? when the Scriptures have ordained no one to do such!" and that, "As a matter of fact, The Bible does not command or even suggest such an arrogant approach to the healing ministry as Mr Press is demanding of the evangelist. Our great example concerning the healing ministry is no other than our Lord Jesus Himself. Throughout the Gospels it is reported that He healed all who came to Him" (emp. his).
Obviously, there were no hospitals and emergency rooms 2,000 years ago in Jesus' day. But there were multitudes of sick and dying people, of whom were graciously healed by the miraculous power of God.
But there are hospitals and emergency rooms today--all over the world--that are filled with the sick and dying, including people who can't be transported to Benny Hinn's crusades.
And Benny Hinn still accepts invitations to conduct his "healing" crusades, as he did years ago in Canada and in the above-cited Catholic hospital in Canada.
It is a well-known fact that on his daily TV show, This Is Your Day, Hinn sits facing the TV camera, stretches-forth his hands, and proclaims people being healed from a veritable cornucopia of diseases and illnesses. Thus, it stands to reason, since Hinn openly demonstrates his so called "anointing" from long distances, he doesn't have to pay a personal visit to hospitals and emergency rooms. All he has to do is stand outside or, better yet, "speak the word" and command the diseases to depart from the sick and dying.
A good example of this is documented in the September 12, 2004 article, "OUT OF CONTROL, AGAIN! Benny Hinn screams, hisses and pushes followers during Canada Crusade." Here is a brief excerpt:
"Hinn faces the camera and screams, "YOU IN YOUR HOMESSSSSSS!" (hissing sound) "You in your homes, you've watched the miracles. It's the presence of God we hunger for" (deep, guttural). It's the presence of God we're starving for. It's the presence of God every cell in our body is STARVING FOR! I release the anointing of the Holy Ghost...I release this anointing, and I speak forth the word of deliverance, and I cast every demon out! You devil of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and AIDS--COME OUT! Come out in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God" (http://www.christianresearchservice.com/BennyHinn4.htm).
And, since Benny Hinn's own words in Welcome, Holy Spirit clearly contradict Mr. Cuke's statements, let's see what the Bible has to say.
In Matthew chapter 8, a centurion came to Jesus and told Him that his servant is lying paralyzed at home, and is in great pain. Jesus told the centurion He would come and heal the servant, but later instantly healed the servant from a distance.
Note that in verse 7, Jesus said, I will come and heal him.
In Matthew 9:35, the Bible teaches that Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
Note the words, Jesus went about all the cities and villages...healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
In Matthew chapter 10, Jesus called for His twelve disciples, and gave them the authority to heal all types of diseases and sicknesses, among other things. In verses 7-8, Jesus said, And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely you have received, freely give.
Note the words, And as you go...
Mark 5:21-24 records: When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet and implored Him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live. And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
Note the words, And He [Jesus] went off with him...
Note that when Jarius informed Jesus that his daughter was dying, he fell at Jesus' feet and begged Him to go to her and heal her. Jesus agreed, and in Mark 5:35-43 we find that Jarius' daughter had died, but was raised-up by Jesus: While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore? But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, Do not be afraid any longer, only believe. And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. And entering in, He said to them, Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep. They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along
the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, Talitha kum! (which translated means, Little girl, I say to you, get up!). Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.
Note that Jesus, Peter, James, and John came to the house of the synagogue official and, along with the daughter's parents, entered the room where the child was.
Luke 10:1-9 tells us that Jesus appointed seventy individuals, and sent them ahead into cities and places where Jesus would soon follow. Part of Jesus' instructions to the seventy were to "heal" those who were sick (verse 9).
In John chapter 11, Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus that Lazarus had died. Jesus went to Lazarus' tomb and raised him from the dead: So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb (verse 38).
Note that the Bible says that Jesus, came to the tomb.
In Acts chapter 9, we see a kind, charitable disciple named Tabitha, who fell sick and died (v. 37). After her lifeless body was prepared, it was laid in an upper room. In verses 38-41, Peter was summoned by two men to go to the upper room where Tabitha's body laid in state. When Peter arrived, the men brought him into the upper room, where he knelt and prayed, then looked at Tabitha and said, Tabitha, arise (verse 40). Tabitha immediately opened her eyes, looked at Peter, then sat up.
Note that in Acts 9:38-39, Peter was summoned by two men, and voluntarily went to the upper room where Tabitha's body rested.
In Acts 28:7-9, Paul visited Publius, where he learned that Publius' father was bedridden and was suffering from a recurring fever and dysentery. Note in verse 8 that Paul went in to see him and after he had prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him. Afterwards, the Bible says that the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and getting cured (verse 9).
Again, Paul went in to see Publius' bedridden father. God worked a miracle through Paul and healed Publius' father, which resulted in others who were suffering from sickness and disease to come to Paul to be healed.
In James 5:14, we find a Scriptural command that is often overlooked by Christians: Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
Notice that those who are sick must call for the elders of the church to come to them, not go to the faith-healer at the crusade.
When Benny Hinn claimed to have visited the sick and dying at the Catholic hospital cited above, he went to the patients in their rooms, not the opposite!
While it is true that many of the sick and dying were brought to Jesus to be healed, Jesus never instructed His disciples to announce and advertise massive "healing crusades" in cities and towns, nor did He instruct His disciples to nail "healing crusade" posters to trees, erect expensive billboards along the roads, or pass-out flyers to the local merchants. Jesus never told people or His disciples that if the sick and dying want their healing, they must come to His crusade, name it and claim it, parade around on stage (where many end-up lying on their backs shaking and wiggling out-of-control under the so-called "anointing").
Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel (John 5:19-20).
The Father ordained Jesus to heal the sick and dying and raise the dead to life. Jesus ordained His disciples, of whom later became His apostles, to heal the sick and dying and raise the dead. Both Jesus and His disciples received the sick and dying and went to the sick and dying.
After reading Mr. Cuke's letter, Sandy Simpson, Director of Deception in the Church ministries, had this to say:
"'Arrogant approach to healing'? What could be more arrogant than advertising a healing crusade (not in the Bible), telling everyone that you have a double or triple anointing from God (not in the Bible), promising that everyone in the audience will be healed (not in the Bible), asking for donations based on a promise of healing (not in the Bible)? Mr. Cuke does not think through his own arguments. The point is that if Benny Hinn can promise healing to EVERYONE in his audience (I have many clips of him doing this), why can he not go to a hospital where people are really sick and promise the same thing? Does Hinn have faith that can move mountains, or is his 'healing' based on an atmosphere of control and manipulation that can only be achieved in a mass meeting?"
A William Cuke is listed as a member of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the West Indies (PAWI). Along with his PAWI membership, he is also listed as "Pastor Emeritus Rev. William Cuke" (click HERE).
Finally, and for the record, on May 9, 2006, the Open Letter to the People of Trinidad & Tobago was also sent to numerous individuals within the Pentecostal Assemblies Of The West Indies.
There was no reply from them either.
