LifeWay Removes Brooke Boon's Book, Holy Yoga

But 'Pro-Homosexual' Authors, Books Still Available for Order

LifeWay Christian Stores, a division of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), has removed Brooke Boon's book, Holy Yoga from its main online Christian bookstore at www.lifewaystores.com.

Boon's book joins Susan Bordenkircher's book, Yoga for Christians, in LifeWay's removal department (see LifeWay Online Christian Bookstores (8/17/06) and Major Online Christian Bookstore Sets Precedence, 8/19/06).

But die-hard converts to New Age "Christian Yoga"1 need not worry. Boon's book, additional books promoting yoga, and books authored by pro-homosexual authors Chris Glaser and Virginia Ramey Mollenkott, are still available for order online through LifeWay's walk-in bookstores

Chris Glaser, according to his website, has been a "gay Christian activist" for thirty years, and is the author of books such as, Come Home! Reclaiming Spirituality and Community as Gay Men and Lesbians; and Reformation of the Heart: Seasonal Meditations by a Gay Christian.

In a book that commemorates the life and teachings of Henri Nouwen, Glaser authored Henri's Mantle: 100 Meditations on Nouwen's Legacy. In a brief description of the book on Glaser's website, Glaser states he was a "student and friend" of Henri Nouwen ( http://www.chrisglaser.com/book.html ).

According to Michael Ford's book, Wounded Prophet: A Portrait of Henri J.M. Nouwen, Nouwen struggled with homosexuality since the age of six (p. 73). The description of the book at Amazon.com states in part that:

"...Ford's biography also contains some striking surprises about the extreme loneliness and anxiety that plagued Nouwen throughout his life. Wounded Prophet is especially insightful regarding the connections between Nouwen's homosexuality, which he grappled with in earnest during the last years of his life..."

According to her website, Virginia Ramey Mollenkott is a "lesbian feminist" and the author of books such as, Sensuous Spirituality: Out From Fundamentalism; Transgender Journeys; and The Divine Feminine: The Biblical Imagery of God as Female ( http://www.geocities.com/vrmollenkott/omnigender.html ).

Once informed, most LifeWay walk-in bookstore employees were shocked, then puzzled as to why the authors were in LifeWay's walk-in online bookstore database in the first place.

Lack of communication

On April 21, 2007, the article "Hidden from View" was published on Christian Research Service's website. In an attempt to inform the SBC about the ongoing issue, a brief introduction and link to the article was sent to approximately 193 individuals within the Southern Baptist Convention--including the president of the SBC, state conventions, SBC theological seminary officials, and individuals within the SBC's North American Mission Board Cultural Evangelism Division.

As of this writing, only one official has replied--a seminary president.

During the days after "Hidden from View" was published, CRS made it a point to call a number of LifeWay walk-in bookstores and ask if the books on yoga and books written by Chris Glaser and Virginia Ramey Mollenkott were still available  for order. Again, as before, the answer was, Yes. When asked where the books were being distributed from, LifeWay employees said, Spring Arbor.

For the record, Spring Arbor and other distributors have been contacted and provided with information and the MASTER LIST. They are aware of the issues concerning non-Christian authors and books within walk-in and online Christian bookstores.

Quality or quantity?

But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22).

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1).

With the above Scriptural commands in mind, it is important to note that in his January 30, 2007 statement titled "Third-Party Distribution," LifeWay's Mark Scott informs the reader on how many books (titles) are made available to LifeWay from its distributor:

"LifeWaystores.com is enhancing its efforts to ensure that questionable books are filtered out of a massive list of titles available online through its third-party distributor. In fact, the third-party distributor makes 130,000 titles available to LifeWay, while adding sometimes as many as 1,000 new titles each week. Lifewaystores.com includes only about 100,000 of these titles, having eliminated nearly 25 percent of the books for a variety of reasons, most often because of inappropriate content" (emp. added).

As Christians, LifeWay employees are commanded to test all things by God's holy word, be alert for false prophets and false teachers, and guard the flock (Acts 20:27-31). Unless LifeWay has a battalion of solid, Bible-based speed-readers on hand, how is it possible to read, discern, and apply the Biblical test to "100,000" books before promoting them to the body of Christ?

The answer? Impossible! Thus, quantity over quality.

The message is loud and clear: there is a tremendous need for education and discernment within the Christian bookstore industry. There are authors--whose false teachings are just as cunning, manipulative, and horrendous as cults such as Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormonism--occupying the shelves and online cyber-shelves of Christian bookstores.

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

Intentional or unintentional?

While the sincere study of God's word to gain discernment is primary, Mike Oppenheimer shares an additional problem within many Christian bookstores:

"Many bookstores do not look at the content of the books and music they sell and some do not care; they run it as a business not a ministry, never considering that they will answer to God for selling misleading teachings that influenced people’s lives. It’s unfortunate that most people do not see false teachers as a serious problem" ("What is Going On in Bookstores???" ).

Christian columnist, Paul Proctor, echoes Mike Oppenheimer's concerns with:

"You would think that a Christian bookstore is a place where only biblically sound materials are sold. If you take the scriptures literally, like for instance: 'Abstain from all appearance of evil.' -1st Thessalonians 5:22- and in your heart, believe them to be the inspired and inerrant Word of God, then anything that contradicts it cannot legitimately be considered 'Christian.' But, that doesn't seem to matter anymore, does it?" ("Should Christian Bookstores Offer Anything From Bibles To Porn?")

In her article, "Trinkets or truth," Lynn Vincent quoted the Christian Booksellers Association president, Bill Anderson stating that:

"'If there are books and products that run cross-grain with Scripture, we shouldn't be selling them...Most retailers I know are committed to pleasing the Lord, and running a business that is honoring to Christ. None I know would intentionally carry a title that runs counter to Scripture.'"

Note that Lynn Vincent's article was written in 1996. Fast-forward eleven years later to 2007 and we find that books running "counter to Scripture" are being carried intentionally. By doing so, Jesus Christ is being dishonored. Consequently, the Christian bookstore industry is not only suffering from an acute case of compromise, it has invited judgement from God.

For the time being, while excuses disguised in compromise may serve to preserve positions, pay checks, and keep the doors to Christian bookstores open, the day is rapidly approaching when at Jesus' glorious return there will be no more excuses.

We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error (1 John 4:6).

Artful dodgers

But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you (Galatians 2:4-5).

Since the birth of the Christian bookstore, the presence of non-Christian authors on bookstore shelves has been a rock in the shoe to many bookstore  owners, managers, and employees across the nation. Cultic, heretical, New Age, pro-homosexual, and Word-Faith authors promote a counterfeit Jesus, counterfeit gospel, and counterfeit Holy Spirit. They disagree with and twist out-of-context the very words of Jesus Christ. They cause strife, confusion, controversy, and division. They are enemies of the cross:

For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things (Philippians 3:18-19).

False prophets and false teachers are enemies of the cross. They dance to the tune of a false god. They wallow like pigs in their own glory and popularity. They condition the minds of the innocent and gullible. They are extremely dangerous to the spiritual welfare of the believer and must be rejected immediately, without hesitation.

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? (2 Corinthians 6:14-15)

Although sincere Christians exist within the Christian bookstore industry, the industry is teeming with many shrewd individuals, who are skilled in the art of compromise, damage-control, and spin doctoring. They cause the innocent to stumble. They pay lip-service to Jesus Christ, but their hearts are far from Him (Matthew 18:7; Matthew 15:7-9). Instead of humbling themselves in prayer and repentance, they allow money, power, and prestige to take priority in their lives.

They are artful dodgers, whose hearts have turned cold to Jesus Christ and the truth of His word. Good is bad and bad is good. Poison is sweet and sugar is bitter. To them, Christianity is a 9 to 5 job, where the financial bottom line takes priority over the authority of God's word and the welfare of the body of Christ. When exposed, they scurry around searching for dark places to hide. Their is no conviction of sin, no repentance, no apologies; just excuses.

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight! (Isaiah 5:20-21)

Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! (Matthew 18:7; NASB).

Judgement is coming. In the meantime, what the Christian bookstore industry needs is bold and courageous Christians; Christians, whose hearts are not corrupted by the things of this world; Christians, who refuse to compromise in the midst of their peers and the powers-that-be; Christians, who are willing to sacrifice everything for the One Who sacrificed everything for them.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand (Ephesians 6:12-13).

Strange irony

advertise to announce or praise (a product, service, etc.) in some public medium of communication in order to induce people to buy or use it; to give information to the public about; announce publicly in a newspaper, on radio or television, etc.; to offer goods for sale or rent, solicit funds, etc., by means of advertisements (Dictionary.com).

promotion something devised to publicize or advertise a product, cause, institution, etc., as a brochure, free sample, poster, television or radio commercial, or personal appearance (Dictionary.com).

There is a difference in knowing and not knowing, and being aware and unaware. For example, there was a time when LifeWay advertised and promoted hyper-heretics such as Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, and John Shelby Spong within www.lifewaystores.com. But they were removed. And according to LifeWay employees, they are not carried within LifeWay's walk-in bookstores.

However, books written by Hinn, Copeland, and Spong--along with books written by Chris Glaser and Virginia Ramey Mollenkott--may be ordered from LifeWay's walk-in bookstore online database. To verify this, prior to publishing this article, CRS contacted LifeWay walk-in bookstores again, and asked if books authored by Hinn, Copeland, Spong, Glaser, and Mollenkott could be ordered. The answer was, Yes.

It is important to note that when LifeWay employees were asked if books authored by Anton LaVey could be ordered, the answer was, No, he is not in our system (which means that Anton LaVey is not in LifeWay's database, and therefore cannot be ordered online through LifeWay's walk-in bookstores).

LaVey, of course, authored The Satanic Bible.

But books authored by false prophets, heretics, and pro-homosexuals can be ordered. How strangely ironic. If one non-Christian author cannot be found within LifeWay's "system" database, why not others? After all, The Satanic Bible is available from CD Gospel.Net, Cokesbury, and HarperCollins Publishers  (parent company of Zondervan Publishers).

Is LifeWay really listening?

"'I want LifeWay to be totally open in everything we do...I can

say beyond a shadow of a doubt that anyone could come into

our building and examine any area of LifeWay and find a

deep level of openness and integrity in everything we do. We

certainly go far beyond what we are legally required to do'"

The question must be asked: Why has LifeWay removed authors and books promoting pro-homosexuality from its main website, but makes pro-homosexual authors and books available to order through its walk-in bookstores?

The question looms like a dark cloud over LifeWay. And that is precisely what CRS was going to ask LifeWay's president, Thom Rainer, on April 25, 2007. When informed that Rainer was in a meeting, CRS requested to speak to "anyone" on LifeWay's Executive Management Team, but no one was available to take the call.

As of this writing, there has been no return calls from Rainer or anyone on the Executive Management Team.

Is LifeWay really listening? Does LifeWay really care?

After all these years, despite all of the information that has been made available, the promotion of non-Christian authors and books is a way of life at LifeWay.

Hardened hearts

But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:13).

This year, after a variety of X-rated materials were found within an online Christian bookstore, the website owner explained he was "absolutely mortified," and that "As Christians it's our responsibility to protect people from that sort of thing" (refer to "X-rated Christian store's troubles traced to Amazon").

The owner also explained that "...if a permanent solution isn't available, he'll shut it down" (Ibid.).

The owner was more concerned with the mental, physical, and spiritual welfare of his customers than making a buck. He kept his word. The website disappeared. Good for him. Praise the Lord!

While character, honor, and integrity are meaningful to some, quite frankly, others seem to care less. To them, repentance is a thing of the past. There is no conviction. Their hearts have been hardened by sin. And sin is the life's blood of a hardened heart (Matthew 24:12).

A final word...

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences (2 Corinthians 5:10-11).

Those who truly love Jesus Christ carry deep within their hearts a flame that cannot be extinguished; a flame that ignites righteous indignation in the midst of compromise and deception; a flame that encourages Christians to stand fast in the midst of persecution and hardship; a flame that is a rock in the shoe to wolves in sheep's clothing; a flame that convicts Christians of sin and drives them to their knees in repentance; a flame that eagerly awaits the return of the only King of kings and Lord of lords.

Jude 3

1Are you planning to attend classes on "Christian Yoga"? Before you turn your back on Jesus Christ and perform postures that mimic snakes, scorpions, grasshoppers, and a corpse (dead body on a slab), you would do well to read Dave Hunt's book Yoga and The Body of Christ prior to uttering your first Hindu Sanskrit greeting, Namaste. Afterwards, if you choose to practice yoga anyway, at least you will know both sides of the story when Jesus returns (Proverbs 14:12).
