Christian Newsgroups: Haven for Porn Peddlers

Porn peddlers go to great lengths to push their filth on the Internet, and Christian newsgroups are far from being immune.

Pro-Family activist, Bud Press, has seen his share of the hit-and-run tactics employed by the perversion pushers, and is sounding an alarm to moderators of Internet Christian newsgroups: "Check your Files, Links and Photos sections for porn on a daily basis."

Whether Christian or secular, most Internet newsgroups offer a Files, Photos and Links section, which allow the members to post information, view pictures, and link to other websites with similar interests.

But this year alone, Press has lost count of the numbers of Christian newsgroups that have fallen prey to pornographic materials, some of which contained pictures child porn.

"Porn pushers," according to Press, "join these groups, post their filth, then quit the group--all within a few minutes."

"One Christian group in particular," said Pres! s, "had over 4000 members. Its Photos section contained numerous pictures of young nude girls. One of the girls looked to be less than 10 years old."

Press immediately contacted the Moderator of the group. When there was no reply, he sought help through the group's membership.

"According to the few who responded, the Moderator had left the group and failed to appoint another Moderator," Press said. "While only a few members expressed deep concern over the pictures, one member responded with sarcasm. Overall, they seemed helpless."

"The pictures had been in this group for months," said Press, "and were there for everyone to see, including impressionable children; maybe lurking pedophiles."

Press wasted no time in reporting the pictures to the Morality in Media, Inc. hotline at
www.obscenitycrimes.org and Yahoo! Abuse where, Press said, his emotions kicked in.

"For me, the toughest part of reporting child porn is describing the pictures," said Press. "I became so emotional I had to step away from my computer for awhile."

While Press maintains that reporting child porn is something he will never get used to, his concern for innocent children overrides his personal feelings.

"Our younger generation is under a 24 hour assault from the pornographers," Press said, "and Christian newsgroup moderators need to be aware of the battles being waged on both sides."

"Christian newsgroups are unique," said Press. "They can be a place of learning, sharing, and fellowship. But it is the moderator's responsibility to guard their groups to the best of their ability."

Press maintained that while most moderators view porn as a serious threat to the spiritual and emotional welfare of their group, he said that "some moderators act as if they could care less."

But what about ! the 4000 member Christian group and the pictures of child porn? "Within a few hours, Press said, "the whole group disappeared from the Internet."
